Counselling In Newcastle With John McColl - Specialist In Relationship Counselling

Life can often only be understood by looking backwards.... BUT  Life must also be lived facing the other direction.
                                                                                                       John McColl

Imagine standing at the back of a ship where this photo was taken.......

And you are looking back at the wake of the ship.

And you ask yourself this question... is the wake of the ship driving the ship?

The answer of course is no, the present time energy transmitted though to the propellors is what is driving the ship, and if you were the captain of that ship the odds are you will be in the bridge facing the other direction.

We often look back even if we are not aware of it, because on one level we are the sum total of every thing we have experienced. Have you noticed whether we are feeling guilty about the past or apprehensive about the future we are loosing our power of the present, and depreciation rather than appreciation seems to be part of it.

There are of course many angles and perspectives we can look at something. Sometimes to look at a problem from a diverse range of perspectives we can come up with the right solution or solutions. When we have a small problem and we think about that problem we will often solve that problem. With a large problem however the more we think about that problem the more we get more of that problem, and we get more of that same feeling.

In my humble opinion many mental health practitioners have been trained to devote too much of the session focusing on the problem, in fact for many that is all they focus on. As a trained and experienced psychotherapist I am aware of this because that was part of my training, and no doubt some people do benefit from that approach.

However it has also been my experience in over 10,000 hours of face to face counselling (this includes all interactions with clients eg hypnosis etc) When someone is ready to make those changes and move on.... Their focus is always more solution orientated. Obviously we have to understand the problem, that goes without saying but the energy of the problem and the energy of the solution are two completely different energies. One is a feel good, one is a feel bad.  Albert Einstein said you can't solve a problem with the same mindset that created it.                                       I think he is bang on.

That is why I am more of a solution orientated practitioner. I don't see myself as a typical psychotherapist or counsellor. As a general rule I am not interested in analysing people and to putting them into boxes by giving them labels. Because at the end of the day the labels may be correct.... BUT the question that should be considered... Does the label serve that person, and if it doesn't then the therapist by definition is part of the problem.

So if you have had enough of the old ways and you need a hand to make those changes.....Call me

The difference between Psychotherapy & Counselling?

What is Counselling?

Counselling is usually a short term experience, focusing on your specific issues or problems which are currently troubling you. Personal and Relationship Counselling is a chance to talk over what is on your mind with an objective person who can help you learn new skills and ways of looking at situations which enable you to be more capable of solving both those current problems and those in the future.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a relationship you share with another in order to understand the deep complexities of what is at work inside of you.

Psychotherapy teaches you to face the biggest frontier- the journey within yourself. It has been estimated that each week around half a million Australians visit counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists and spiritual directors.

Counselling and Psychotherapy with John McColl can help couples or individuals

You enter the psychotherapist's space when your life seems difficult, and it goes without saying this is an act of courage.

Psychotherapy is often a path of discipline, self-responsibility and liberation. It can also be a path of soul and sacredness. Psychotherapy is the art of knowing yourself!
